Understanding Traffic Violations in Southern Nevada

Thousands of people are cited for traffic violations every year. Most pay the ticket without knowing the consequences, or realize they have legal options. If you choose to simply pay the fine, it will go on your driving record and remain on your record for years. One of the primary consequences of simply paying the ticket is the increase in your insurance rates. Legal representation can reduce or eliminate some of the most serious consequences.

Offenses and Point Values

The following is a partial list of traffic violations and demerit points in the State of Nevada:

  • Reckless driving 8 points
  • Careless driving 6 points
  • Following too closely 4 points
  • Disobeying a signal or stop sign 4 points
  • Passing a school bus when signals are flashing 4 points
  • Speeding 1-10 mph over the speed limit 1 point
  • Speeding 11-20 mph over the speed limit 2 points
  • Speeding 21-30 mph over the speed limit 3 points
  • Speeding 31-40 mph over the speed limit 4 points

Drivers can receive a ticket for either a moving violation or a non-moving violation. A moving violation refers to cases in which a driver violated a traffic law with the vehicle in motion.

Moving violation examples

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Failure to stop at a stop sign or red light

Non-moving violation examples

  • Driving with broken taillights
  • Parking in a no-parking zone

Consequences

The Nevada DMV will enter the offense on your driving record and assign demerit points on your license. An accumulation of demerit points can result in additional fines and penalties, up to and including a suspension of your driver's license.

Offenses become a permanent part of your driving record. Insurance companies conduct regular checks and will raise your insurance premium if they find an offense on your record.

You shouldn't have to pay for minor mistakes the rest of your life. Tickets will follow you and having a knowledgeable attorney on your side is often your best option to obtain a successful resolution.
